Patricia Rincon Dance Collective renowned for its adventurous programing, celebrates its 30-year anniversary with this 14th experimental installation of Blurred Borders. Featuring quality experimental dance blurring the edges between movement and sound, political dance theatre, dance + sign language between hearing and deaf dancers, all incorporating powerful inventive movement and thought-provoking subject matter.
The Blurred Borders Festival is an annual cross-cultural event created to foster the artistic and intellectual exchange of ideas of progressive international, national and local artists.

PROTEST DANCE” is a work that is inspired by the history of protest from the 1960s to the present.

• KIM EPIFANO AND MUSICIAN STEPHEN KENT (SAN FRANSISCO)
“Alonesome/Twosome,” a duet created from a drawing given to Epifano by well-known artist Remy Charlip. The use of sign language is fundamental to the choreographic language. Antoine Hunter is a deaf performer who has traveled nationally and internationally, helping the general public to understand the deaf community. With live sound score by Stephen Kent and Kim Epifano, the piece is riveting and personal, using, didgeridoo, melodica, and electric guitar. http://www.epiphanydance.org

“cracked melody. . .(UN)chained” Emerging composer/pianist Kyle Adam Blair and recently transplanted, NYC-based choreographer Darcy Naganuma come together for the premiere of “cracked melody. . .(UN)chained,” an experimental new work that smears the edges of movement and sound. JOE ALTER (SAN DIEGO) has been an active dancer, choreographer, and teacher in the field of contemporary dance for over 25 years. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University with an emphasis on choreography and dance technology. As Artistic Director of the Joe Alter Dance Group, his works have been performed at The Kitchen, The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse, the 92nd Street Y, Harkness Center for Dance in New York City; also internationally in Germany, Poland, and Serbia. In collaboration with international partners, Alter created the Polish Project, a regional outreach program designed to investigate the creative process with disadvantaged youth throughout Poland. Currently he is performing a new collaborative dance/theater piece, “The Hybrid Authorship Project,” with collaborators Liam Clancy, Eric Geiger, D.J. Hopkins, Marc Wittman, and Craig Wolf in which they are investigating questions of perception. http://www.jadg.org
LUX BOREAL (MEXICO) Based in Tijuana, México, Lux Boreal is one of the few professional crossover dance theater companies with a bi-national relationship between the artistic communities of Mexico and the United States. This fact has allowed the company to present their work in different venues resulting in a permanent cultural exchange with United States. As well, Lux Boreal has brought their work to numerous dance/arts festivals around the world in such countries as Chile, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Brazil, Spain, Argentina, and Latvia. For 10 years, the company has developed work of its own, but also trusts the process of collaboration as an opportunity for establishing bridges and expanding the artistic vision of the troupe, working with guest choreographers like Allyson Green (US), Magdalena Brezzo (Uruguay), Claudia Lavista (Mexico), Phillip Adams (Australia), and Joe Alter (US). As a result of their busy agenda and their impact on dance-related activities in the national dance scene, Lux Boreal has been sponsored by Mexico’s National Council for Culture and Arts through the program “Mexico en Escena” since 2007. More recently they’ve been sponsored by the Baja California State Program of Creation and Artistic Development as Emerging Choreographer (PECDA) in 2011-2012, by Baja California State Program of Creation and Artistic Development as Performer (also PECDA) 2011-2012, by Sinaloa State Fund for the Culture and Arts as Consolidated Choreographer (FOECA) 2011-2012. Blurred Borders International Dance Festival is an annual cross-cultural event created to foster the artistic and intellectual exchange of ideas of progressive international, national and local artists. This 11th edition of Blurred Borders Festival returns with a blend of potent dance theatre and creative video dance that deals strongly with border crossings — human, age, gender, and physical borders. Featuring contemporary risk-taking choreographers whose work is fresh and powerful.
The Patricia Rincon Dance Collective receives significant funding from The San Diego City Commission for Arts and Culture, The San Diego County Community Arts Grants by way of Pam Slauter, The John and Beverly Stauffer Foundation, San Diego City College Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and World Cultures Department, The City of Encinitas Community Grant (with a matching grant from the Mizel Family Foundation), the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts, UCSD Latino Studies Research Initiative, and private donors.
In October 1996 Artistic Director Patricia Rincon completed the first American tour of international choreographers here in San Diego called Kultur Mix International Dance Festival, now called Blurred Borders Dance Festival.
